Who Will Take Care of Mom?

One of the fundamental issues regarding long term care insurance is the care of an elderly parent. For many years the prevailing approach was for children to take in an elderly parent and care for them indefinitely. However, these days many families have two working parents and this is not feasible. Often, people will state, “I don’t want to go to a nursing home” and suggest this will just not happen. The fact is that the majority of Americans at some point in their lives will need skilled care.

Purchasing long term care insurance will at least give you the option of going into a facility. That is an important concept. You may believe that you or a loved one may never go into a skilled care facility. However, without knowing exactly how you or your family will age and what conditions you might develop, it is very important to have the option to pay for a long term care facility.

Here is a thread from a man whose mother had a stroke and is in a nursing home but feels he can avoid that by being self insured and living at home.
