Who Will Take Care of Mom?

One of the fundamental issues regarding long term care insurance is who will take of an elderly parent. For many years the prevailing approach was for children to take in an elderly parent and care for them indefinitely. However, these days many families have two working parents and this is not feasible. Often, people will state, “I don’t want to go to a nursing home” and suggest this will just not happen. The fact is that the majority of Americans at some point in their lives will need skilled care.

Purchasing long term care insurance will at least give you the option of going into a facility. Th at is an important concept. You may believe th at your self, or for example your mother, may never go into a skilled care facility, but at least allow th at to be an option.

Here is a thread from a man whose mother had a stroke and is in a nursing home but feels he can avoid th at by being self insured and living at home.
