Bo,

The 98% is UNUM's claims payment ratio for their DISABILITY POLICIES. I know that UNUM does not publish their long term care insurance claims payment ratios. Very few long term care insurers do publish that information. The only 3 that I know of are GE, Hancock, and CNA.

To suggest that UNUM's approach to long term care insurance might haunt them is ludicrous. By 'different approach', I assume that you mean 'indemnity policies' rather than 'reimbursement policies'. They have very tight underwriting standards. They have a lot of long term care claims experience and they have never raised their rates on any of their long term care policyholders. They have been and continue to remain one of the top ten long term care insurers.
