Lingering death occurs when it's in the interest of the nursing home, the insurance company, the medical community, the Health Care Financing Administration, etal to keep you alive. The only guilt that'll haunt the children is that they wasted the estate money on 'insurance premiums' they were confused into buying from listening to your scare tactics. A child should not be the POA, I recommend a sibling. The children are not the caregivers, the 'system' is. The children only sit by and watch as the system keeps their parent subsisting until all resources are exhausted. Stories of living an 'additional 12 happy years' are right out of 'insurance salesman school'. People should make their decisions for themselves before the time comes. A little COMMON SENSE tells you what I've outlined is the answer, not buying more insurance that INSURES you'll have long term care.
