Scott, My sympathy to you all for what you went through. My point is that if someone else is in charge of my health care, that means I'm incompetent of making my own decisions. Therefore, instead of buying insurance to guarantee the nursing home and medical establishments are assured of their fees, I made a decision while I'm still competent that by the time I lay dying, I want my heirs to realize a gain, not a loss from my leaving. If my quality of life does not bring happiness to me or those around me, let me go. Happiness means doing things that are enjoyable to me, sitting in a wheelchair and soiling my pants, not recognizing loved ones, or staring at the other patients drooling at the dinner table is not enjoyable to me. Long term care insurance is simply another profitable growth industry for everyone involved. I refuse to pay their premiums so I can subsist for long periods in the underpaid, understaffed and overworked nursing home industry. The essence of my life is contributing. When I cannot contribute any more to design, writing, family, or hobbies, please let me go. Contribute whatever funds I've accumulated to my heirs, not to long-term care. We all have to go sometime, keeping people alive indefinitely is an invention of the modern medical community, way beyond reasonable expectations. In the last 2 years I've seen many patients so wasted away from disease it'd be a blessing if they'd just die. But with todays drugs and medical policies, they keep them subsisting. They look like concentration camp victims, and it's legal! Well, so is my POA for Health Care Document my lawyer wrote with my help. I encourage anyone worried about spending their estate on long term care consider how the POA document may give the protection they seek. Your concerned friend.
