I appreciate that most (all?) LTC policies have an alcoholism exclusion. My father is a recovering alcoholic, 62 years old in NJ. Can anyone tell me the standard policy language in this area? I appreciate that it would not cover treatment in a rehabilitation center, but what if dementia, organ failure, or a serious accident was brought about in part by alcoholism? Also, are there any carriers who don't exclude alcoholism?

Generally, there are no exclusions in a LTC policy as it relates to health. If your father is able to qualify for a policy, he will be covered regardless of the reason that he requires care.
Every company looks at a recovering alcoholic differently. All companies want to see proof that an applicant has been alcohol free for a number of years and fully recovered. Depending on the carrier, it could be anywhere from 2 to 5 years.
However, that assumes that there are no residual effects from his drinking, such as cognitive or liver problems to name a two.
If your father is now in generally good health, you need to meet with a broker who represents a number of companies in NJ, and find out who may consider insuring him.
