 Career agent
Author: Jennifer

Hi,

I need help in finding a well established insurance company in which I could pursue a career in Long Term Care insurance. Can anyone direct to an insurance company who might offer a career opportunity specifically in LTCI. I haven't the experience to work on my own as an independant.

Thanks in advance.

Jen

Jennifer;
It depends on the state where you live. That will determine the carriers available to you.
There are probably a number of Captive companies to look at.

However, before you settle on being Captive, you might want to speak with a General Agency in your local area that specializes in LTCI. A good GA may be able to give you the support that you require.

Being Captive means that you work for and represent only one company. That may not be in your long-term best interests, nor the best interests of the clients you'll be dealing with.

Don't make a quick decision, you're dealing with your career.

Jennifer, talk with John Hancock Life, Met Life, Mass Mutual Life and GE Capital. Those are career shops with "STRONG" LTC sales forces.

Best wishes,

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't aware Mass Mutual was a big player in LTCI. Do they have a competetive product? Do a lot of their agents just specialize in LTC?

Also, I was under the impression GE's LTCI was only available for independant agents. Am I wrong?

An insurance friend wasn't that thrilled about John Hancock. He said something about not being sure the company is still solid as it once was.

Anyway, thanks for helping me. It's appreciated.

Jennifer;
No, Mass Mutaul is not a big player in LTCI. Most of their agents specialize in Life Ins.

Your friend is off base regarding John Hancock, they're VERY solid.

GE does have a Captive sales force, but they also broker their products through agencies.

GE & Hancock do 40% of all LTC sales.

Good luck,
Arthur

I think it would be GE or Hancock, and my decision would be based on if one of these is represented in a stong way in your area. I would talk to two of the biggest players with each company, and pick one from that. J. Hancock probably has a better 12 - 24 month program than GE foir newbies (just my guess), and you would have other JH products to market. BUT... JH has also started brokering quite a bit through Raymond James reps in my area, so check out all that too. Good luck!

Jennifer,

Instead of picking a company, pick a strong agency. Having a strong agency behind you will give you the best chance of succeeding in this business.

My first choice of where to look would be your local MassMutual agency. Their product is no better than anyone else's. However, you won't have pressure to sell their product. MassMutual owns an insurance brokerage. Through this brokerage, you can sell Hancock, GE, Allianz, and others. It gives you the best of both worlds. You'll have an agency behind you, but you are not captive. Other companies may give you the same leway. Since you are going to specialize, stay away from companies that force you to sell their products because every situation is different and you need to always do what is in the client's best interest.

Now, go back and read my first paragraph. Pick a strong agency. This is the only way to succeed.
