Retirement means different things to different people. Often, it is seen in a positive light, such as in the concept of “enjoying one's golden years." This is true at times, but is simplistic and can ignore the efforts older people go through to enjoy their later years. Just because one stops working does not mean the expenses of daily living stop as well; not only do they persist until later in life, but they can be quite severe.

This can be particularly crippling in the case of a person who might need skilled care in a facility such as a nursing home. In the event that this becomes necessary, either the expense of that would have to be paid out of pocket, or funds would come from an insurance policy such as those provided by long term care insurance.
